Ohio has now made sports betting legal. Governor DeWine signed the House Bill 29 into law back on December 22, 2021. The Casino Control Commission now regulates sports betting in Ohio as of January 1, 2023. The new law allows for bars, restaurants, casinos, stadiums and sports teams to apply for sports gambling licenses. The Ohio Legislative Service Commission estimated that sports betting will yield more than $3.35 billion in revenue per year by the end of the decade. A 10 percent tax on net revenue will be put in place with approximately 98 percent of the tax proceeds going towards school funding and the remaining 2 percent problem gambling assistance.
Many bars and places that already offer Keno machines will also offer sports gaming kiosks. But the overwhelming way most Ohioans will gamble is on their phone through a sports gaming app. That means people can place bets anywhere in the state, 24 hours a day.
You will be able to bet on all major U.S. leagues, including football, basketball and baseball; many college sports; international sports like the Indian Premier League for cricket; and esports. Sports books online or in-person aren’t required in Ohio to offer the same options, so if you want to bet on some smaller or more obscure options, you may have to shop around.
Sports betting apps require basic personal information, including name, date of birth and last four digits of your Social Security number. They will often need a day or two to verify your account. Generally, you can make deposits into your account (the money you will bet with) using a debit or credit card, online banking transfers, Apple Pay or PayPal transfer. Note that you may be required to submit an image of your government identification (driver’s license, passport or ID card) to verify your account and/or to withdraw money from it.
There are some great bonuses available for the launch of the state, find our more here.
